AG urges change of course for Caritas

Caritas St. Elizabeth's Medical Center in Brighton should abandon its role as a top-level academic hospital treating complex cases, and Caritas Carney Hospital in Dorchester should consider becoming a mental health center, says a report on the Archdiocese of Boston's hospital chain by Attorney General Martha Coakley.

The report, based on a four-month study, also urges the archdiocese to cede control of the operation of Caritas Christi Health Care System so that an independent board with expertise in healthcare management can run it. The board now answers to Cardinal Sean P. O'Malley.

The report is a stern indictment of the church's ability to run the six-hospital chain in an increasingly competitive healthcare environment.

"Unless they change course, they will continue to fall behind," Coakley said in an interview.

2 men nabbed in slashings, beatings

Two men were arrested late Saturday after a street fight outside the White Eagle Social Club in Bridgeport that left numerous people beaten and slashed.

Jesse Rivera, 37, of New Street, Shelton, is charged with first-degree assault, two counts of second-degree assault and single counts of third-degree assault and breach of the peace.

Officers seized a folding knife from Rivera, police said.

A 17-year-old resident of Park Street, Bridgeport, allegedly punched Rivera as officers were trying to arrest him. Rivera had cut him, the teen later told officers, and he had cuts on his arm and face, police said.

The teen is charged with third-degree assault, second-degree breach of peace and interfering with police.

Police responded to an 11:15 p.m. street fight outside the rental club, at 595 East Washington Ave., and found numerous people with broken noses and bruises and cuts.

Study: Casino plan overstates jobs

We cannot improve or build a region's economy based on an industry that depends on our citizens losing billions of dollars every year," Bailey said in a prepared statement.

Meanwhile, Rep. Daniel Bosley, D-North Adams, sent out a position paper disputing the governor's claim that casinos are "inevitable." In it, Bosley argues that the tribe's plan to build a $1 billion Indian casino in Middleboro faces bureaucratic hurdles.

"There are so many hoops that the native tribe would have to jump to get to a point where the governor thinks they would be," he said.

Patrick has hired Spectrum Gaming to do an analysis of his plan. That $189,000 study won't be done for another two to three months, perhaps after the issue is decided.

"I think a lot of people have their minds made up," Bosley said.

Peter Cochrane's Blog: No risk, no progress

The removal of risk from people's lives is leading to a lack of understanding, imagination and, worst of all, real progress.

Recent constraints on the working environment in the UK prompted me to muse on the following proposition. Suppose a health and safety directorate had been the first of all human innovations and institutions. Can you imagine the consequences?

I think it goes something like this: no running, climbing, swimming, throwing and definitely no tools or weapons - and certainly no wars. So no progress then. Humans would have been in stasis pretty much like most animals.

Let's fast forward to the start of the industrial revolution before we invoke health and safety systems: no large-scale smelting of ores, no engines, no advanced tools or weapons, no wire, no mass-produced glass or anything else, and certainly no telegraph.

Prepare to meet thy pothole (and deal with a grim fate)

This column normally aims to inform, not scare the heck out of you. But how else to describe the horrors that await your car when you smack a really bad pothole?

"The potential damage are blown tires, bent rims, broken suspension components, or bent suspension components such as ball joints, tie rods, control arms, MacPherson struts, broken springs due to impact, blown shocks, or even a bent spindle," said Larry Rubenstein, mechanic and owner of Route 1 Auto Service in Peabody.

All that from hitting a pothole?

"Yes," he replied. "That's what happens."

Today we probe no one's favorite subject, potholes.

What, exactly, is happening underneath the floorboards when you hit one dead on? Is there anything you can do to limit the damage? And, the question I was dying to know, is the city, town, or state that owns the pockmarked roadway under any obligation to pay your repair bill?

I say that nobody likes potholes, but that's not entirely true.

Similarly, the IGMC will get another sophisticated equipment that will help in destroying certain components of the blood like lymphocytes, which could prove harmful in a particular ailment.

NACO will also provide a mobile van fitted with refrigerator and provisions for blood donation. This will be of great help while conducting blood donation camps in the town or suburbs, said officials. The bank will also be provided with the latest couches for use during donation.

The blood bank at the IGMC caters to the requirement of not only local government hospitals, which despite having their bank, depend heavily on the IGMC, but at the same time there is demand for blood from out station. The IGMCs demand for blood has gone up ever since the start of the open heart surgery, which normally has a requirement of up to eight units.

Daily Blabber Celebrity Gossip Blog from iVillage Entertainment

Larry will join a plethora of Britney insiders that Kevin is hoping to use to bury his ex.

UPDATE: In new court documents that have been released, it is revealed that Kevin's lawyers intend to serve Britney's "sober companion" (insert joke here) and a former nanny.

The papers also disclosed Brit's income: $737,868 A MONTH, with Kevin receiving $20,000 a month in spousal support. The Fedster "has no net income after business expenses," the papers say.

Good thing Britney has all that cash because, according to my calculations, she's going to need to spend about that much in legal fees.

Struever to unveil massive expansion at Tide Point

Baltimore developer Struever Bros. Eccles & Rouse Inc. has proposed an extensive expansion of its successful Tide Point business park in Locust Point that includes nearly 200,000 square feet of office space, a parking garage and several new residential buildings, according to city documents and sources familiar with the project.

Struever Bros. representatives are scheduled to present their plans Thursday afternoon to the city's Urban Design and Architectural Review Panel. The developer has been working behind the scenes with a task force of the Locust Point Civic Association, a neighborhood group whose endorsement would help Struever Bros. gain approval from the city's planning commission and City Council. The neighbors and developer last met Feb. 19 in a closed-door session at Tide Point to refine the project.

Aussie's snowball charges dropped

BRECKENRIDGE, Colorado: US prosecutors have dropped assault and harassment charges against an Australian man who threw a snowball at a ski resort co-worker.

It was in "the best interest of justice" to dismiss the case against 21-year-old Andrew Thistleton, prosecutors said. Mr Thistleton said he was overjoyed at the outcome. "It's been a long time but you know all's well that ends well and I'm just happy that it's finished and it's over after all this time," he told the Seven Network from Colorado. Mr Thistleton, a Sydney University and former Scots College student, was scheduled to go on trial today for a second time. His first trial ended in a mistrial last week. Authorities said Mr Thistleton hit Michelle Oehlert on the back with the snowball last February when both were working at a Copper Mountain ski resort rental shop.
