VeraSun, Enterprise team up on ethanol

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Enterprise Rent-A-Car and VeraSun Energy Corp. have announced that a Sioux Falls rental car branch will rent vehicles that run on a blend of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline.

St. Louis-based Enterprise has launched similar branches in Washington, Cincinnati and other parts of the country.

The Taylor family of companies, which includes Enterprise, National Car Rental and Alamo Rent A Car, rents some 73,000 flexible fuel cars and trucks which can run on E85 or standard unleaded gasoline.

Brookings-based VeraSun is one of the nation's top ethanol producers.

The companies are holding an inaugural fueling of the new fleet on Monday.

Renting 'green'? Not so easy

We're not going to be able to save the world," says Andy Taylor, Enterprise's chief executive, "but we think we can have an effect on the space where we play every day as a business. And we think that's what our customers and especially our employees want us to do."

But - and you knew there would be a "but" - Enterprise can only do so much. Its customers, and those of sister brands Alamo and National, aren't guaranteed a hybrid rental car because there aren't enough of them for the company to buy. Most of its flex-fuel cars never run on ethanol because E85 filling stations are scarce. And fewer than one in 10 customers so far are paying the extra $1.25 per rental to offset their carbon emissions.

Green is a popular theme in the rental car business these days. Hertz, for instance, markets its "Green Collection" and offers hybrids at 50 U.S.

Travel Troubleshooter: What’s this mystery charge?

Question: Im trying to get a refund for my car rental insurance and I could use a hand. My wife rented a car online through Alamo for pickup in Madrid. The agreement clearly stated that the daily charges, taxes and collision damage waiver, were included.

We returned the vehicle without a problem. But weeks later I discovered that we had been charged an extra $300 for something called a Super Collision Damage Waiver. We had never requested this Super CDW coverage and it wasnt reflected in the original rental agreement.

In fact, I didnt think insurance of any kind was necessary, since my credit card offers coverage. After a lengthy argument to try to remove the regular CDW feature, the Madrid counter staff insisted that I retain it. And they never said I would be charged for another policy, which, strangely, was submitted as a separate unsigned credit card slip.

You gave us the airplane that first graced the skies and the astronauts who explored the heavens - including my friend and hero, Senator John Glenn. The steel from these mills armed America through two World Wars, put cars in our garages, and built our cities rushing skyward.

For so many years, this state has defined our values, expanded our horizons, and kept the American Dream alive. But at the beginning of this new century - here in Youngstown and across this state - the American Dream is being tested.

Some jobs have left, others pay less, so you just work harder. Health care, energy and college costs are up - so you stretch your budget further.

Maybe you're a working mom or dad raising your kids - and also a working son or daughter caring for your parents - and you feel overwhelmed.

UPDATE 1-Wetherspoon's second-half outlook hits shares

Hutson said Wetherspoon's performance was as good as any in the industry but it will now open only 23 pubs in its current financial year, having cut the figure to 25 from 30 in February.

Hutson said that was an indication of how "we have drawn our horns in a bit" in the current environment.

Wetherspoon has 214 sites in its pipeline for new openings, and these should cost less per square foot because the company was renegotiating contracts with landlords amid weakness in the property market, he said. Continued...

CPS enjoys stunning victory

As a result, the campaign was able to buy extensive radio advertising and scatter red, white and black yard signs throughout every corner of the sprawling district, which includes Cincinnati and parts of 11 adjacent municipalities.

On the campaign trail, an army of parent volunteers pointed to CPS' recent academic gains and unusually long delay in asking for a tax hike as reasons to support this request.

Darrick Jones, 37, of Bond Hill, said he voted to approve the levy.

'KEEPING OUR NEIGHBORHOODS VITAL'

"Our neighborhoods are our schools," he said. "They are the most important thing to keeping our neighborhoods vital."

But Kyle Snyder, 38, of Hyde Park, said he cast a "no" vote.

For church goers: less money to insur. companies and more to the church- lots more. Srs on Medicare: save way over $100/wk. Because no more medigap, long term care & dental insur. needed. No more drug bills."

But if we the American people fail to bring enough pressure on our current politicians to get HR 676 passed into law before the elections. We will have to identify, and replace all the politicians standing in the way of passage of HR 676. And, I think the best first place to start is with the politicians that blocked the bipartisan SCHIP bills for the kids. Passed by congress twice.

But what about the President. It was Bush after all that blocked the bipartisan SCHIP bill passed by congress to assure more health coverage for Americas kids. So which of the presidential hopefuls do I think will be most supportive of implementing the demand of the majority of the American people to have HR 676 (Medicare For All) passed into law immediately!

We have some very fine presidential candidates who would make good presidents.

Families weigh cost of getting to grandma’s house

Diane Perry and her children are going to grandmother's house for Thanksgiving. However, instead of traveling over the river and through the woods, they will drive from Londonderry to Logan International Airport and then fly to Sarasota, Fla.It's a variation on the classic song that pulls much harder on Perry's purse."I wouldn't do it if it weren't for the fact that my mother is so old and she hasn't met my youngest yet," she said. "It's not getting any cheaper, and I'd hate to think that finances kept (Sarah) from ever meeting her grandmother."Regardless of the high price of travel, AAA estimates that 38.7 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more this holiday weekend. Historically, Thanksgiving is the holiday with the greatest number of travelers, no matter how expensive it is, public affairs spokesman Pat Moody said."There is a lot of tradition and family gatherings that are going to happen — regardless of gas prices," he said. That's somewhat the case for Steve Rodrick of Hampstead.
